Our goal is to provide useful information and advice to independent retailers that will help them overcome obstacles and thrive in the Canadian retail market. The research is driven by independents themselves, ensuring that we delve into the issues that matter most to them.

While identifying major trends affecting retailing in Canada, we aim to provide understanding of obstacles to growth with specific resources to assist the implementation of growth strategies. We will outline the importance of market knowledge and show how research will lead to securing merchandise at competitive prices.

By reviewing technological advances, we will examine how that investment may increase productivity, while uncovering best practices with respect to finances, business planning and other issues critical to the health of a retail establishment.

Regional meetings will take place to discuss challenges and trends affecting communities across Canada, allowing research to be specific to both urban and rural retailers.

Upon completion of the meetings, survey and consultation of experts in the field, a report will be released giving an overview of the national retail landscape with a focus on regional and provincial trends. The report will contain valuable data and resources to help small retailers succeed in areas such as competition, demographics, marketing and advertising, product sourcing, technological change, HR issues, store design, loss prevention, and more.

Continued support to independents will be ensured through the website and newsletter dedicated to independent retailers. These resources will keep the community connected, up to date with best practices, and offer valuable networking opportunities. The establishment of an independent retailer division under the RCC umbrella will provide independents with useful resources and advocacy.
